Writing a Novel – What Does It Take?

Writing a novel is easy. The hardest part is picking which one you want to write. Pick a topic that is easy to write about and that interests you. You can choose between Science Fiction, Mystery, Thriller, Noir, or a combination of all those genres.


Writing a short story has its advantages but it does not cut it if you are looking for a novel. A novel needs to be full of life and character development. It should be written well enough to be read more than once and also be able to be made into a movie.

When you have a general idea of what you want to write then you need to pick out a good sample to follow. This can be from the internet or perhaps see if you can get a copy of your own novel. There are many online sample novel websites.

Remember to give your main character a name. All the characters should have a believable and lovable personality. They should be believable and also be depicted in such a way that the reader cannot help but sympathize with them.

Be honest in every scene and point of view. You don’t want your readers to be switching perspectives midway through the novel. Also make sure that when the characters are talking that they really talk like that.

Try to do some research on the topic and see if it is something that is worth the work. If it is not something that interests you then it is probably best to move on. But if you have researched it and you think that it is something worth doing then by all means do it.

One thing that is going to help your new project is if you have some experience in the subject area. This will allow you to capture what it is that you want to write about. You don’t want to start out with a subject that is really not exciting to you.

There are a lot of different types of novels that are out there to choose from. You can get an author’s book report from your local library. This will give you an idea of what type of novel you should be writing.
