“The Human Emperor” by Daniel Abraham is a remarkable novel. It is not only a wonderful story but it is also one of the best science fiction novels I have ever read. The main character is called “Jack Conrad” and his battle to survive a strange disease is very compelling and engrossing.
The human race is placed on a space station orbiting a green world with a thin atmosphere. Humanity has almost completely eradicated themselves and are living in tents and cabins. The humans suffer from a unique skin disease called “Human Annihilation Syndrome”. They were born about 400 million years ago but no one knows when they disappeared.
The book opens with the main character Jack Conrad (real name unknown) living in a tent in the middle of an atmosphere that has been devastated by humans and was even turned into a giant dome. Humans have destroyed most of the planet and everything is different. Mankind has started another war with the firefly species to prevent the other from conquering the planet. Jack and others, including a young girl named Ellie choose to get away from this Earth and go to the moons of Jupiter and Saturn.
There, we meet a new man and woman who are the next generation of the human race. The Universe that we live in is not what we think it is. It is much bigger than what we imagine.
Reading this novel was very mind-boggling. There are millions of similarities between “The Human Emperor” and the two movies “The Terminator”Terminator 2: Judgment Day”. The two stories are similar, except for the fact that there are other life forms in the Universe that oppose humanity. In “The Human Emperor”, the two heroines are not killed by the very first scene. This is because Jack Conrad has survived and lives a normal life without being involved in the war or killing humans.
The Human Emperor is a thriller. When you think that a story is simple and has no complicated plot, that is when the plot twists start happening. The plot of the novel was unbelievable at first, but when you see how the story goes, you will realize that it is unbelievable too.
What struck me the most about this novel is that humans are made to be a part of the Universe. Everything is happening because of humans and their choices. It reminds me of the question: “Will humans destroy the Universe”? At first, I was not convinced by these arguments but after finishing the novel, I realized that a lot of people do think like that.
If you want to read a novel that makes you think, read “The Human Emperor”. I know that some people might think that I am exaggerating a bit when I wrote that, but I assure you that this novel was quite incredible. I am looking forward to the next installment in the series: “A second chance”.
